I embedded with Platform HI (one of Jony Ive’s teams) for about nine months in 2016-17. One of the first things I worked on there was Type to Siri (see Settings | General | Accessibility). I led multi-platform interaction and visual design for this feature, collaborating closely with a prototyper in the group I would later join, Siri Advanced Development.
During that same period I also collaborated closely with the HI team on what became Do Not Disturb While Driving (Settings | Do Not Disturb). I led behavior and policy design, and contributed to copy and visuals.
Copy-wise, a minor contribution I’m proud of was the string “I’ll send this:” a succinct but clear way of explaining that Siri will send your message automatically on Apple Watch given no additional interaction (other than lowering your arm).
On the less functional, more fun side of copy, I’ve had a hand in writing or editing a few of Siri’s amusing musings over the years. For example, I suggested a beneficial edit to the famously viral Cookie Monster response for “what’s zero divided by zero” (although the lion’s share of credit should of course go to original author M.). Here are a couple of Siri groaners that you can entirely blame on me:
