My Mitsubishi Electric Research Labs colleagues and I built an immersive driving simulator using a D-BOX seat and off-the-shelf PC hardware and software.

Among a few studies we carried out using this setup, this one found promise in Head-Up Displays (HUDs) for the transient presentation of even non-driving critical information. In the intervening years, this kind of supplemental HUD content has become the norm in production vehicles.
